It’s been about 1 year since I bought my 29 gallon SeaClear tank on Amazon (pictured above), so now seems like a good time for a post on this aquarium!
After living with it and interacting with it on a daily basis, I feel like I know this tank inside and out (literally) 😉
Today I’m going to give you the low-down.
I’ll show you what makes this tank special, and what you need to know if you are considering getting one.
Let’s dive in!
SeaClear 29 Gallon Summary
- Gallons: 29
- Shape: Rectangle
- Weight: 20 pounds
- Dimensions: 30″ L x 12″ W x 18″ H
- Model number: X1010012290
- Material: Acrylic
Elegant curved corners, no distracting rim, lightweight and strong…
… What’s not to love?
This tank gets complimented by everyone who sees it, and for good reason.
Here’s the skivvy on the SeaClear 29 gallon:
- The tank itself measures 30″ long by 12″ deep by 18″ tall.
- The large access opening on the top is 23″ long by 5.25″ wide.
- The filter opening at the back on the top is 15″ by 2″.
The rectangular shape gives your fish good horizontal swimming room.
It has the footprint of a 20 gallon long tank, but the extra height gives you nearly 10 additional gallons!
Also, the acrylic is 1/4″ thick and very sturdy.
It’s a great space-efficient solution for those that want a larger tank but need something more compact.
You can choose from:
- Deep blue or
For my setup, I went with the clear back.
The deep blue or black is probably ideal if you feel like you really need to conceal the equipment you are going to be using. It too has its own advantages and I also have another SeaClear fish tank with the blue back.
With clear, you can always put a background on it and change it out as you like.
(Personally it looks so great as is I don’t use a background at all.)
One thing I wanted to mention is this tank comes with a sand-colored lining on the bottom that shows through from underneath.
I found this actually has a nice, natural effect if you plan on keeping your tank bare-bottom.
But you can use any substrate you choose.
More on the Top of the Tank
As you might be aware, the tank has a “lip” that partially encloses the top of the tank.
This serves two purposes:
1. It protects against spills in case the tank gets jostled.
Unlike standard tanks that come with a trim that goes around the top, the SeaClear 29 gallon tank is considered to be rimless. If it gets bumped, water is protected from splashing out.
2. It provides a nice resting place for your arm or supplies.
Take it from me:
When you are performing maintenance on a tank sometimes your arm gets tired from holding the siphon or arranging plants.
One nice thing about this tank is how you can rest your forearm on the edge comfortably, which is something you can’t really do with a standard tank.
It’s also a convenient place to set your bottle of water conditioner, food, net or other supplies while you work.
There are two main openings on the top of this tank.
- First is the main opening that you will use for working in. It measures 23″ long by 5.25″ wide.
- Behind that is the second opening at the back of the tank, which is narrower and designed to allow for filtration accessibility (it is 15″ long and 2″ wide).
So you can easily attach your hang on back filter, canister filter tubes, etc.
There is also a smaller round opening to the left of it which is just the right size for a heater to fit through.
I recently discovered there are two small holes in the lip at each end (near the back of the tank).
Airline tubing can fit through perfectly, which you can easily connect to an airstone or internal filter.
I’m telling you:
This tank was designed by someone who KNOWS what it’s like to be a fishkeeper!
Some Lid & Lighting Modifications to Consider
This tank does not come with a lid, but a light fixture that is supposed to double as a hood.
I knew before the tank showed up at my doorstep that light fixture was going to be replaced.
(I replaced it with a NICREW light that looks way better, and I can grow plants).
So I unscrewed the plastic casing from the hood and used that as a lid to prevent evaporation for a long time, but looking back I wouldn’t recommend doing that.
It looked terrible and due to the awkward shape it was to move it to access the tank.
After dealing with that for longer than I should have…
I went by the local hardware store and cut 2 pieces of clear acrylic, one for the main opening and one for the opening in the back (since I’m not currently using that for my filtration).
Now I can easily slide it to the left or right to feed the fish, and it is very inconspicuous.
At first I started with a cabinet-style stand for this tank.
If that works for your needs, that’s a great way to go.
I ended up switching to this frame-style stand because it opened up the room more and I didn’t need to conceal my filtration.
It has enough support that I don’t even need to brace the aquarium underneath.
I decided I wanted to paint it white to match my decor and turned it around so I couldn’t see the scrolls.
The best part?
I could even put a second tank on the bottom if I wanted to. (Wait, would I do that? hehehe….)
The nice thing is its not hard to find a stand for this tank, as it has the dimensions of a standard 20 gallon long tank, it’s just taller.
Here are my findings about this tank…
- The tank is leak-proof because it is made of one solid piece of acrylic.
- Elegant curved corner design means no front-seams
- No distracting trim
- Ultra-durable – acrylic is more than 10 times stronger than glass
- Brighter and clearer than glass
- Lighweight yet sturdy
- Great to showcase your aquascape and fish
- Designed with many practical features
- You will probably want to replace the light fixture, especially if you want to grow plants
- Scratches more easily than glass, but the scratches usually can be buffed out
Overall, I am just as in love with this tank today as I was the day I first saw it.
The tank is running smoothly and is still just as beautiful of a show aquarium as ever.
So, if I had to do it all over again…
… Would I buy it?
My only regret is that I bought it last year before they really reduced the price in 2019 – (I paid almost double what it is now)!
So if you like it, don’t waste time and buy it from Amazon before the price goes back up.
Now I want to hear from you.
