The Marineland 5 gallon Portrait is potentially the most popular nano aquarium among hobbyists, and for good reason – it’s a fantastic value (similar tanks have been sold at double the price).  The back of the tank has a hidden filtration system that includes biofoam and a Rite-Size Z Cartridge.  Best of all?  You can adjust the flow of the filter pump to be more gentle for delicate species of fish.  Other unique features include a high quality design, pedestal base, sliding glass canopy for easy access and a very competitive price. The kit is also easy to set up.

    Volume: 5 gallons

    Dimensions: 9.625″ x 9.625″ x 17.2″ (with base)

Those who wish to grow plants may want to switch out the light to something more suitable, as it is only strong enough for viewing fish.

Perfect for those without a lot of space for an aquarium, this is a nano desktop option with a clean, modern design.  The Fluval SPEC III is now upgraded to a sleek and bright new 7000K LED light suitable for growing plants.  The filtration system is virtually silent and affords clean, crystal clear water with minimal maintenance.  Assembly is straightforward.  Additionally, the right size heater will fit perfectly into the filter compartment, remaining completely out of sight.

    Volume: 2.6 Gallons

    Dimensions: 8.7 x 10.8 x 11.8″

Though the tank has an adjustable flow, it can be modified if desired to be even more gentle for a betta fish. Some have found putting a sponge on the filter output does just the trick. Others punch holes in the filter tube to distribute the current in a less forceful way. Not everyone finds this modification is necessary but it may prove useful to some.

The Penn Plax rimless nano aquarium line has got to be one of our favorites. Curved corners afford seamless front view. (Don’t like the curved corners? You can simply turn the tank around for a more angular style.) The tank comes with a closed cell foam mat for leveling and surface protection, as well as a clear removable hinged lid which can help prevent evaporation. It is undoubtedly one of the best tanks for the price on the market, available in a wide variety of sizes to suite your needs.

These aquariums come with an internal filter and light, both of which many aquarists choose to replace for higher quality equipment. That said, the tank itself is more than worth the price, so we view the additional equipment included more as a bonus.

    What is a Nano Aquarium?

Nano aquariums are small aquariums, typically considered to be under 10 gallons in size.

The focus is on keeping smaller species in a setup that doesn’t take up so much space – which is an appealing concept today when so many people don’t have the room for a large fish tank, but want to have a little slice of nature to appreciate.

    As far as livestock goes…

Popular options include betta fish, small shrimp and invertebrates, but there are also many other kinds of fish that do well in a nano tank (source).

Plants are usually smaller species, such as anubias nana petite.

Some propose the nano aquarium is more delicate than a larger tank, where fewer temperature swings and a larger water volume can afford some room for error.

The challenge is still exceptionally rewarding.

Why Go with a Rimless Tank?

The advantages of a rimless nano aquarium are definitely aesthetic.

But isn’t that why we keep fish to start with? 🙂

    Let’s face it:

The smaller the tank, the more increasingly distracting that ugly black trim can be.

Rimless fish tanks blend seamlessly into any environment, regardless of shape or size.

Tips for Keeping a Nano Aquarium

    • Remember that air fresheners, bug sprays or any other airborne toxins will have a more concentrated effect if they get in your nano tank than in one that has a larger volume of water.
    • Not all species are fit for being kept in one, so doing your research will help you lay a foundation for success.
    • Filtration can take you a long way in keeping a smaller volume of water clean, but it’s always a good idea to set your tank up in a way that gives you some cushion in case of a power outage. (Anyone say “live plants?”)
    • If the power goes out, a little tank won’t hold the temperature as long as a large one. Power outages are a fast way to rid your tank of all those messy fish overnight.

Having a miniature aquarium to compliment your living space and provide a beautiful home for your fish elevates your environment to a new level.

With so many wonderful styles to choose from, you’re sure to find the right fit for your needs.
